Gurbhinder Singh alias Bhupinder, the main accused of the honour killing case that occurred three weeks ago in border area Naushehra Dhala village, has confessed to killing the couple. Gurbhinder has been found to be closely associated with dreaded gangsters active in the area.
Amandeep Singh (24) of Naushehra Dhala and his wife Amanpreet kaur (22), who belonged to nearby Gehri village, were shot dead on September 15. The couple had a court marriage about a year ago. They were coming back from Gurdwura Baba Budha Sahib, when the accused opened fire on them.
The police had registered a case under Section 302, 148 and 149 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act against ten persons, who were relatives of the girl. Those booked included Manjit Singh, brother of the girl; Mewa Singh, her uncle; Gurbhinder Singh, cousin; Surjit Singh, Harwinder Singh and Amarjit Singh of Gehri village.
SP (Investigation) Jagjit Singh Walia, on orders by SSP Dharuv Dahiya, told mediapersons on Monday that Gurbhinder, who had surrendered in a local court on October 3, was brought on a production warrant here. The SP said besides Gurbhinder Singh, Manjit Singh, too, has been arrested by the police. The accused in their interrogation confessed to their crime as they said they felt humiliated after the marriage of the girl.
The SP said Gurbhinder Singh was in contact with infamous gangsters and was involved in other criminal activities. The police is yet to recover weapons used by the accused in the crime.
