As the monsoon is expected to lash the region in the next two days, officials of the district administration held a meeting with the officials concerned of various departments here today. The objective of the meeting was to supervise the arrangements for dealing with a flood-like situation in the district.

Two rivers — Ravi and Beas — pass through the district. The Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Ravinder Singh, directed the officials to complete the cleaning and desilting of drains in a time-bound manner.

While supervising the arrangements, he instructed the Sub-divisional Magistrates (SDMs) of Ajnala and Baba Bakala from where the Ravi and Beas rivers pass, respectively, to make plans to ensure safety and security of the people living near these rivers.

He asked the officials to prepare a list of the affected villages and identify the places where they could be shifted in emergency.

“A control room has been established for an efficient communication system during the monsoon,” the ADC added.

He said the Animal Husbandry Department should arrange fodder and medicines for the animals and the Powercom authorities should ensure continuous power supply at relief camps.

The Food and Civil Supply Department has been asked to arrange kerosene, diesel, petrol, ration and other eatable items. The Health Department will oversee the availability of medical staff and medicines. The ADC also asked the officials to make adequate arrangements of boats, life jackets, bags and ropes.

SDM (Amritsar-II) Rajesh Sharma, SDM (Amritsar-I) Nitish Singla, SDM Ajnala Raja Oberai, District Revenue Officer Mukesh Sharma and Superintending Engineer of the Drainage department Jasbir Singh Sandhu were also present at the meeting.
