Advocate bats for use of regional languages in courts

Sukhraj Singh Brar, former deputy advocate general of Haryana and senior advocate of Punjab and Haryana High Court, launched a concerted campaign to garner support for using regional languages (Punjabi or Hindi) in the courts here today.

Currently, the court work is done in English language which is constitutionally a wrong practice, he said at a press conference. He along with his colleagues paid obeisance at Golden Temple before starting their campaign. He said he would make advocates aware so that the Punjab Vidhan Sabha could be convinced to move a motion to the Governor for using Punjabi or Hindi language in all courts in the region. He met local advocates and Bar council members and urged them to join hands in this noble cause.

He said the common man didn’t understand English language used in the courts. Therefore they failed to contest their cases in a proper manner. Using regional languages would enable them to fight their legal battle in a better way by giving their opinion.

He said he along with his supporters had already given a memorandum to the Governors of Punjab and Haryana. English language is not approved in the Indian Constitution that accepts 22 regional languages of the country, he says. He expressed his dismay that seven states in the country use their regional language in the courts then why not Punjab and Haryana do the same.
