The Railways has announced to convert weekly Amritsar-Lalkuan (Nainital) Garib Rath train into an express train from August 15 following a petition filed by Punjabis living in the Terai area of Uttarakhand.
As per the information provided by the Northern Railways on its website, Amritsar-Lalkuan weekly train will be express train from August 15 onwards. Timing of the train will remain same. It will continue to depart from Amritsar and Lalkuan on every Saturday.
The Garib Rath train has 18 coaches, including 13 AC three-tier coaches, three AC chair car and two generator coaches. From August 15, these will be replaced with eight sleeper class, six general class, two disabled friendly second class, one AC II tier and one AC III tier.
En-route Lal Kuan, the train halts at Beas, Jalandhar City, Phagwara, Ludhiana, New Morinda, Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, Chandigarh, Ambala Cantt, Jagadhari, Saharanpur, Roorkee, Laksar, Nazibabad, Moradabad and Kashipur.
Keshav Passi, a resident of Lalkuan, whose family migrated from Punjab to Terai region, said all racks of the Garib Rath train were air conditioned. This had limited the use of train as everybody could not afford expenses of air conditioned coaches. He said he filed a PIL against this in the court, which gave decision in his favour.
