For the first time in the history of Government Medical College, the MBBS students will sit in exams at a centre outside the institute.
The decision was taken by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS). The Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers Association has expressed its resentment against the decision.
Association general secretary, Dr Karanjit Singh, said, “The Government Medical College has been functioning before 1947. But during all these years, students have been taking exams on the campus. Why all this mistrust now. The university has not even bothered to take faculty into confidence.”
Dr Karanjit said going to another campus to take an exam was harassment. He said, “Students feel relaxed when they take exam at their own institute. Now, their time will be wasted as they will have to travel outside the campus for giving exam.”
The BFUHS had decided earlier that MD, MS, MBBS, nursing and others exams conducted by it would be held at only five centres across the state. The students of the same college will have to take exams at a centre outside the campus of their institute.
While requesting to university to review its decision, the association stated that MBBS exams were considered toughest and it was not easy for students, especially girls to appear at a faraway place.
The university has notified Khalsa College of Nursing as examination centre for MBBS students of Government Medical College. Some members of the faculty said, “It is sort of de-glorifying an institution, which was established in 1920, by mistrusting its faculty and MBBS students and asking them to appear in exams at a nursing college.”
