Barnala’s Sukhvir Kaur claimed the first position in the group of students from Classes IX to XII (senior group) and Nawanshahr’s Jalauni bagged first position among Classes VI and VIII (junior group) in a state-level test conducted to develop scientific temper among students by the Tarksheel Society, Punjab. The test results were announced on Monday in which over 10,000 students participated.
Harmandeep Kaur of Bathinda and Ramandeep Kaur of Patiala stood second and third respectively in the senior group. Arshpreet Kaur of Bathinda was second and Aklesh of Jalandhar was third in the junior group.
The society endeavours to dispel superstitious, unscientific beliefs, dogmatic thoughts by developing scientific temper among people with various activities.
The two-hour test, consisting of 100 multiple choice questions, was conducted from a book published by the society two months back. The 95-page book was for students’ upto Class VIII and 128 pages for students’ till Class XII.
Questions ranging from on rebirth, horoscope, astrology, tantar mantar (supernatural powers) and other unscientific concepts circulating in the society were asked in the examination paper.
Sumeet Singh, a representative of the society said the questions were put up to assess the logical skills of students. The students were motivated against superstitions, black magic, orthodox customs, social evils such as intoxicants, female foeticide, dowry and others in a novel way.
