Bike taxi service gaining popularity gradually in city

Two private taxi service providers, who launched bike taxi in the city a few months ago, are getting an overwhelming response, especially in the walled city.
Traffic congestion in the city is one of the reasons behind the success of the bike taxi services. The problem of traffic congestion has grown a lot with the passage of time and the public transport is not up to the mark.
The previous government in the state had started the city bus service but the project turned out to be failure within one year. Later, the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS), a dream project of former deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, was launched here with great pomp. But this too hasn’t been made operational fully due to lack of infrastructure and interest of the state government.
Private companies are well aware of the limited mode of public transport so they feel that bike taxi will gain pace here.
Rajan, a taxi biker, said, “We are receiving good bookings for bike taxis and people are showing interest in it. We charge reasonably. Even tourists are making bookings as they feel it is a good way to tackle traffic snarls in the holy city.”
“Young women avoid opting for a bike taxi so the service providers may hire some woman drivers to address this issue,” said another taxi biker, Harpreet.
There are more than 200 taxi bikers in the city and they get good response from the passengers.
