Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vice-president Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina was today elected Director, Punjab National Bank, at Delhi.
He got the post following a rigorous election process by obtaining 28 crore votes from shareholders of the bank against his nearest rival Gopal Sharma who received only 19 lakh votes and won the post with a heavy margin.
Chhina, who is considered a close confidant to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, had been Chairman of the Punjab Small-Scale Industries and Export Corporation in the Punjab Government and also served as Chairman, of the Amritsar Improvement Trust.
He is considered a clean politician with a vast experience in administration and education, apart from being progressive farmer himself.
Chhina, who was elated over the election, thanked his mentor Jaitley for the election to the post. He is the first progressive farmer and agriculturist from Punjab to get the top post in the country’s second largest bank. At present, he is the secretary of the prestigious Khalsa College Governing Council and the president of the Indian Academy of Fine Art.
Chhina said his priority would be education and agriculture and to bring various government development schemes to a mass level.
He said he would focus on spreading awareness about financial services for the benefit of the poor and downtrodden, besides promotion of small-scale industries and export and import. He added that he would work to the best of his abilities and help in development of the bank by promoting its public-oriented schemes and policies.
