Amritsar, April 11

District Library, in collaboration with the Amritsar Consumer Welfare Forum, marked the 100th anniversary of Jallianwala Bagh massacre by hosting NGO Missiondeep’s girls for a literary event. The girls from underprivileged families, who are given free of cost education by Missiondeep, participated in poetry writing, poster making and other literary sessions at the library. A book exhibition was also opened.

“The books displayed at the exhibition are related to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre’s accounts, stories of the victims and their families, essays by prominent writers of the time and some literature that was not available for readers until recently. It is being hosted for young readers, who want to know about the history of the incident,” she said.

Recently, the library, along with Sparsh Library at Army Hospital, began a book exchange programme under which 100 books were donated to the library being run for and by the ex-servicemen. Initiated by Col Charanjit Sohal, officer in charge, Ex-servicemen Health Contributory Scheme, free book exchange has been started with an understanding that readers will share their books with their community and also to sustain reading culture among retired Army personnels, who visit hospital for their health care.

Col Sohal, was also awarded by Delhi Sahit Manch for his Punjabi Magazine Wagah, that was given the best quarterly magazine award for the year 2018-19.

Librarian Prabhjot Sandhu said she had undertaken many such initiatives that engage community building through books and library.
