Boost to Tarn Taran’s tourism potential

The Tarn Taran district administration has constituted a District Tourism Promotion and Heritage Conservation Committee to explore tourism potential in this border district and suggest ways to increase tourist influx.

The move to constitute a panel to explore tourism potential in the district has been initiated at the behest of Deputy Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Sabarwal. Apart from official members such as the SSP, the ADCs and officials of the Tourism Department, Dr Balvinder Singh, a former professor of heritage conservation, has been appointed as an expert member.

Setting the pace for the move, Dr Balvinder Singh briefed the committee members about the potential of tourism in the district, especially religious tourism.

Dr Balvinder Singh said the district had many ‘serais’ built during the reign of Sher Shah Suri and during the Mughal era. He said the original Sher Shah Suri Marg from Lahore to Delhi passed through Tarn Taran and many Koss Minars from the era were still available. He said the Harike Wetland which had earlier been declared a Ramsar site was also located in the district and could be harnessed to attract tourists.
