Bride backs out of wedlock after groom’s family seeks dowry
Amritsar, April 21
In a bizarre incident, a wedding ceremony being held at a marriage palace was stopped moments before tying the nuptial knot as the groom’s parents allegedly demanded dowry and the bride chose to back out of the wedlock.
The girl’s family belonged to Haripura in Amritsar whereas the boy’s family was from Lucknow.
The groom, Bhupinder Kumar, was in New Zealand on a study visa around two years ago and the match was fixed through Facebook.
Shishan Lal, the girl’s father, has submitted a complaint with the police that the bridegroom’s family demanded Rs 5 lakh as dowry on the spot and he refused to oblige them.
Sources said the boy’s family had come to Amritsar on April 14 and had taken a house on rent on the Majitha road. Both families met for the first time here only and decided to solemnize the wedding. An invitee to the wedding, Parmod Babla, a former Congress councillor, said the unpleasant development had occurred after the boy demanded Rs 5 lakh if she intend to accompany him to New Zealand.
“The girl, who came in contact with the boy through Facebook only, took the instant decision of snapping the ties. The boy, his family and friends slipped away from the wedding spot without letting the conversation go further,” he said. SHO, Chheharta police station Harish Behl said though the complaint has been received, no case has been registered so far as various facts are yet to be verified. — TNS
