“Chauthi Koot is one of the finest films to represent the Punjabi and regional film industry and its release will ensure that it reaches the masses,” said actor Harnek Aulakh, who is a part of the highly acclaimed film. The first Punjabi film to be screened at the Un Certain Regard Section at Cannes in 2015, alongside ‘Masaan’ and winner of this year’s National award for the best Punjabi film, ‘Chauthi Koot’ will see a pan-India release on August 5.

Based on short stories by Waryam Sandhu, the film presents four different stories, portraying and commenting on Punjab in the times of militancy. Shot extensively in Amritsar and Ferozpur, Aulakh, who appears in one of the stories, says Punjabi films like these break moulds and will manage to stand out for the quality of their content and production. “Usually, Punjabi cinema is marketed only through commercial films and such films with intensity and varied emotions do not find many takers. But even with a limited release, I am happy that ‘Chauthi Koot’ will be able to find an audience.”

The film will release across Punjab in all major cities across 50 screens and across 30 centres in other parts of the country with English subtitles. “It is big news for a Punjabi film,” says Aulakh. Gurvinder Singh, director of the film, said they were still working on a few details regarding the distribution of the film and would also hold press conferences in major cities to create awareness.
