The city has forgotten eminent poet Prof Mohan Singh who served at the local Khalsa College for several years and worked to uplift the Punjabi literature in the city.
A local activist demanded from the college authorities and literary organisations to start observing his birth or death anniversary to remember him.
Darshan Singh Mahalpuri from the Preet Likhari Sabha said Prof Mohan Singh spent a long time in the city and contributed several poetry books during the period. Being a lover of the Punjabi literature, he created an atmosphere of literature in the city. His admirers across the world remember him, but his beloved city has forgotten him.”
Prof Mohan was known as the father of the modern Punjabi poetry. He was the contemporary of great Punjabi poets Shiv Kumar Batalvi and Amrita Pritam in the 20th Century.
He was born and brought up in the Pothohar region of the undivided Punjab in the early part of the 20th Century. He joined Khalsa College in the city as a Punjabi professor in 1933. He initiated his literary magazine ‘Panj Dariya’ from the city.
“I have requested to writers and management of the college to remember him. It would be helpful for the young generation as they would get an opportunity to know about the legendary poet. A major function should be organised by the college, literary organisations or the administration,” said Mahalpuri.
