Days after the traffic police received a speed radar to curb overspeeding, it got wheel clamps or auto immobilisers for the wrongly parked vehicles. The wrongly parked vehicles lead to congestion on roads and aggravate the traffic chaos. The problem is massive in the walled city where the roads are narrow. “The traffic police have received 40 wheel clamps. We will start using these on Lawrence Road and the area from Hall Gate to the Golden Temple where the problem is acute,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Dhruman Nimbale. “We will see if the experiment proves successful. We will procure more auto immobilisers. We need over 100 wheel clamps,” he added.

While giving details, Nimbale said a sticker would be pasted on the front windscreen of the car, which would have a toll free number 1073 besides certain instructions. “The violators will have to dial the toll free number following which a traffic cop will reach the spot to unlock the wheel after collecting the fine. If an offender tried to move the car, it would result in a severe damage to it,” he said.

However, one problem which the traffic wing is likely to face is the availability of the cops for the unlocking the vehicle. Nimbale said they would look in this aspect.

Police Commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh said the department was keen to improve the traffic scenario in the city which is visited by a huge number of tourists.
