Young cricketers from the city Sharad Lumba and Abhishek Sharma will play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year. City lad Lumba was auctioned by Mumbai Indians for the IPL while Abhishek is a part of the Indian U-19 cricket team which is playing the World Cup in New Zealand. He will play for Delhi Daredevils.
All rounder Sharad is a right handed batsman and right arm off-break bowler. Having played for Punjab in Under-19 and 22, he made his presence felt with 140 strike rate in the Syed Mushtaq Ali 20-20 trophy.
He played his first T20 for Punjab against Haryana in 2014 and on January 25, he played his last T20 match against Rajasthan at Kolkata.
DAV College’s student and all rounder Abhishek had a great start to his sub-junior career. Left-arm spinner and left-handed batsman Abhishek will the IPL this year.
College principal Dr Rajesh Kumar congratulated him, his family members and his coach Rajan Gill on his achievements. He commended coach Rajan Gill for his efforts to train him well.
Dr BB Yadav, head of the Department of Physical Education, congratulated Abhishek and said he was the pride of their college. He said Abhishek would be awarded the role of honour award during the annual sports meet on February 17.
Abhishek’s father Raj Kumar Sharma, who is also an alumnus of DAV College, said, “I could not play the highest level cricket so I was quick to spot the talent of my son. I tried to support him in every possible manner.” He has also played the Ranji Trophy for Punjab.
