Cleanliness at Transport Nagar a distant dream

The Union Government has been observing Swachhta Hi Sewa fortnight under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, but cleanliness appears to be a distant dream for transporters and automobile workshop owners of Jai Inder Singh Transport Nagar, popularly know as Jahajgarh of Amritsar. The area has been developed by Amritsar Improvement Trust (AIT), but the authorities concerned don’t care about cleanliness.
Water accumulation is often seen here. Mosquito larva can be seen breeding on the stagnated water. The locality is dominated by transporters who have their garages, but even then they have encroached upon a large portion of the area. Even footpaths have been encroached where vehicles are often parked.
Heaps of garbage on roads and streets give the are a shabby look. Besides, stray animals, especially pigs and dogs, continue to haunt people. A chunk of land is encroached by the slum dwellers. They have been residing under pathetic conditions.
Transporters say they have complained many times, seeking solution to the stray animal menace, but to no avail. The green belt in the area is largely encroached upon by violators, but officials of the civic body are till in deep slumber.
“We have been hearing slogans about the Swachh Bharat everywhere but there is no cleanliness in our area. The government should work on the ground instead of spending on advertisement. Transport Nagar is awaiting basic facility of sanitation,” said Rajan, an automobile mechanic.
Meanwhile, Jatinderpal Singh, a city resident, said transporters and automobile workshop owners had encroached upon the green belt and also the road. They too should understand their responsibility, he added.
