Samarpreet Kour and Pahulpreet Singh, students of Amritsar Engineering College and Technology (ACET), have created tiles, which has been made of plastic waste and sand.

Both of them, students of B.Tech (Civil Engineering), have named their product as recycled plastic paver blocks.

To initiate, the students started segregating plastic, taking plastic of waste. Thereafter, they heated the plastic at a particular temperature followed by mixing it with sand. In the last, they left it for cooling for few minutes.

The students said, “The tiles designed by us take less time and help effective utilisation of plastic waste, which is otherwise harmful for the environment.”

“It takes only up to 15 minutes to prepare these tiles. We had also created a mould to let the mixture settle down in a particular way,” said Pahulpreet.

The students wanted to make a product which would be sustainable for the environment and cost-effective. “These are totally environment-friendly. We have conducted multiple tests to make them. These are unbreakable and can be used anytime.” said Samarpreet.

The cost of a single brick is Rs6 and it can be used on footpaths, streets and bathroom floors. These can stay in its shape for 50 years, said the students.

VK Banga, principal, ACET, said, “We are extremely proud of our students. It shall also contribute to keep the country clean as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.”
