To celebrate the World Heritage Week, Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), Amritsar Chapter, organised a day-long craft workshop for embroidery in Phulkari style at Satya Bharti Adarsh Senior Secondary School, Fattubheela, here today. Forty five students from six different schools participated in the workshop, which was conducted by the nine trainers from the nearby villages by forming groups of students. To sensitise the people about cultural heritage INTACH, Amritsar chapter, will also organise the event of clean a monument.
Dr Sukhdev Singh, Punjab state convener INTACH, Sawinder Singh, co-convener INTACH, Baldev Singh, Maluk Singh, ex- sarpanch of Fattubheela, Principal Ravinder K Vohra, teachers and others were present among on the occasion.
An art exhibition, folk dance giddha performance, a power-point presentation on art and types of phulkari were also organised during the event. Various speakers appreciated the work of INTACH.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sukhdev Singh said the objective of the workshop was to inculcate students’ interest in their cultural and traditional arts. He said, “As the art of phulkari is deeply connected with the cultural life of the people of Punjab irrespective of caste and class and at the same time it has the potential of becoming a craft for earning a livelihood. The art of making phulkari is also a fine specimen of folk aesthetics of Punjab. It expresses the fine sensibilities of Punjabi women in their choices of colour combinations, designs, motifs, and accurate knots.”
