Workshop discusses waste management
Department of Botany and the Department of Chemistry of BBK DAV College for Women organised a workshop here today. Dr Adarsh Pal Vig, associate professor, Department of Botanical and Environmental Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU), was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Vig apprised students how to make best use of bio-degradable waste by converting it into manure through vermin composting. He discussed in detail how earthworms were helpful in creating the heterogeneous mixture of decomposing vegetables or food waste and bedding materials. He said, “Vermicast mixture is an excellent, nutrient rich organic fertiliser and soil conditioner. This process also reduces the synthesis of harmful gases such as methane and carbon dioxide, which are produced on decomposition of organic waste.” — TNS
