DC reviews arrangements to tackle floods

Though there is no threat of flood in Amritsar according to the district administration, it has made adequate arrangements to tackle any adverse situation. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shivdular Singh Dhillon held a meeting with the officials concerned to review the situation here on Saturday.
The objective of the meeting was to supervise the arrangements for dealing with a flood-like situation in the district. The DC instructed the officials not to leave the station without permission.
Two rivers. Ravi and Beas, pass through the district. As heavy rain has been lashing the region, the water level has increased but it is still below the risk point.
“There is no risk of flood till date as Ravi river can carry three lakh cusecs of water. Till 10 am today, only 98,000-cusec water flowed in the river which decreased to 47,000 cusecs in the afternoon. Everything is under control. Taking precautionary measures, we have alerted the civil and police personnel. We are also in touch with Army and BSF officials,” said the DC.
While supervising the arrangements, he instructed the sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) of Ajnala and Baba Bakala from where the Ravi and Beas pass, respectively, to make plans to ensure safety and security of the people living near the rivers. A control room has been established for an efficient communication system during the monsoon.
The DC instructed the Animal Husbandry Department to arrange fodder and medicines for animals. The Food and Civil Supplies Department has been asked to arrange kerosene, diesel, petrol, ration and other eatable items. The Health Department will oversee the availability of medical staff and medicines. The DC also asked the officials to make adequate arrangement of boats, life jackets, bags and ropes.
Senior officials of the departments concerned attended the meeting.
