Dera Baba Nanak rail link sought

PPCC chief and Gurdaspur MP Sunil Jakhar, along with Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla and MLA Dera Baba Nanak Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, on Friday met Union Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal and gave a demand letter regarding rail link development between Amritsar and Dear Baba Nanak.
He stated in the communiqué that the government’s decision to develop the corridor from Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district to the international border for which a foundation stone was laid on November 26.
About 1.25 lakh pilgrims and visitors pay obeisance at Golden Temple and visit the places of interest around Amritsar. Almost the same number of devotees are expected to visit the shrine at Kartarpur Sahib, Pakistan, after the commissioning of corridor on 550th Prakash Purb of Guru Nanak Dev.
A pre-Partition rail line connects Amritsar with Dera Baba Nanak via Fatehgarh Churian and Ramdas. Before the Partition, this line continued up to Kartarpur sahib, Narowal district (Pakistan).
The railway bridge on Ravi was demolished by the Army, disconnecting the historic rail line. In the view of the expected footfall, it becomes imperative to take up the doubling and electrification of Amritsar to Pathankot rail line and upgradation of the Verka railway station, along with a new Beas-Batala-Dera Baba Nanak line for providing better connectivity for the incoming pilgrims from all around the world.
He also sought start of a new superfast train from Amritsar to Dera Baba Nanak before November 2019.
