The wedding season is on and so everything that’s flashy and exclusive is in trend. The big fat Punjabi wedding is not complete without the usual fancy and frills. If the wardrobe has gone designer, so has the cuisine and flowers and light and sound diplays. The only thing left for a facelift is the wedding cake and this season the icing has gone designer, too. As the citywallahs deck up for weddings of the season, the wedding cake has caught the fancy of many. Creativity matched with an exclusive price tag and elaborate designs have been selling like hot cakes, literally. City-based bakers are flooded with exclusive customised wedding cake orders, with elaborate designs and resources being arranged from Delhi and Mumbai.
Using edible flowers to edible 22-carat gold and silver, the bakes come with an awe-inspiring element of sophistication as well as luxury. "Just like designer clothes , shoes or cars, even wedding bakes have become a status symbol and lifestyle thing. Since I deal in over 10 kg wedding cakes, most of these designer bakes are a thing for the big weddings, corporate parties and lifestyle shows," says Arundeep Singh, from Cakelicious. He spells out that the trend is growing among the NRI crowd since they want everything exclusive for the weddings. “Preparing a regular 10-kg designer wedding cake takes 10 to 15 days and a detailed procedure has to be followed. Some people do not mind spending a fortune on it, since its visual appeal is too high,” he says.
Another such baker, Yasmine Bains, too, feels the aesthetic and luxury value attached to wedding cakes has made them a centre of attraction. Her creations, weighing 20 to 30 kg and with innovative figurines, shapes and imprint have been selling like hot cakes. Some of these bakes use edible gold and silver, which has to be sourced from Delhi. “It’s difficult to get all the stuff in Amritsar, so some of the most prized and exclusive items are sourced from big cities,” says Arundeep.
Flavoured with strawberries, resin, wine and plum, such cakes are popular with customised love messages. Into this business for over a decade now, city-based baker and designer gourmet expert Parvez Arora, who has his own brand, Chic Chocolate, too, deals in delicate bakes. Most of the city clients are globe-trotters, so each cake has to be treated with some exotic and interesting combinations. "Exotic cakes with fruits and mousse cakes are the most popular," shares Parvez. "There are some with pictures printed or messages and sugar-free cakes, too, are available on order," he adds.
