Dr Rajesh Kumar joined as new Principal of DAV College here on Tuesday. He succeeds Dr KN Kaul, who retired on November 30. Dr Rajesh has earlier served as Principal, Dayanand College, Ajmer, for four and half years before joining here.
A doctorate in botany, Dr Rajesh Kumar has a taught for 24 years at different institutions. He served DAV College, Amritsar, as lecturer for 17 years. He was head, Department of Biology, at Modern Indian School, Kathmandu (Nepal) in 1992. He was in charge Botanical Society of DAV College, Amritsar, for two years. He also acted as programme officer-cum-coordinator of the NSS in the college from 1998 to 2000. He was also appointed as member of the Board of Studies in Botany for undergraduate courses of Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar from July 2004 to June 2006.
While joining office on Tuesday, Sharma shared his views on improving education standards and relationship between students and teacher.
“Students need to connect with their mentors, teachers not just at the classroom level, but also outside. If there is a gap it has to be filled, I will definitely be willing to do so,” he said adding that the current stagnation of education in Punjab needed to be looked at seriously.
He also shared his views on protests by teachers against non-payment of salaries and supported more government aide to facilitate better teaching standard.
Dr Rajesh has published papers in various national and international journals. He has authored 10 books, including three textbooks for degree classes and various books on environmental studies. He is the patron editor of South Asian Journal of Tourism and Heritage (SAJTH), an international referred journal. He has been patron editor of half yearly college news bulletin “Campi News”. He was appointed as manager of Rajasthan Schools and Regional Director of Rajasthan Zone-II by the DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi. Dr Kumar is chief coordinator of the study centre of Vardhman Mahavir Open University, Kota (VMOU) at Dayanand College, Ajmer.
He has received various awards and honours, including Golden Educationist of India Award, conferred by National and International Compendium, New Delhi, in July last year, National Award conferred by Ram Naresh Yadav, Governor of Madhya Pradesh, for contribution in the field of education and research, Star of the Asia Award for contribution in the field of education, given by International Business Council, New Delhi.
