Amritsar, January 14

After remaining closed for nearly six months, the duty-free shop at Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport is all set to open tomorrow.

The tender for the shop has been given to a Dubai-based company, Flemingo. It is to be re-opened at the departure lounge.

International passengers de-boarding at the Amritsar airport have been demanding early re-opening of a duty-free outlet at the departure lounge. In its absence, they were not able to procure articles and eatables of their favourite brands.

The second duty-free shop at the airport is at the arrival lounge, which is working properly.

AAI commercial manager Naveen Sagar said the company had to shut its outlet at the departure lounge of the airport on July 13. The move had come after one of its papers for running the outlet was cancelled.

Since duty-free shops sell foreign-made articles at the same price as that of their origin, stringent Customs norms were implied to prevent their smuggling.

He added that only international passengers were permitted to procure products at these shops.
