After civic bodies, educational institutes have also initiated works under the Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Millennium School principal Mukesh Shelat, while thanking parents of students studying at the school, said Rs 2 lakh was accumulated to raise 500 toilets in Pandori village.
He said the school launched the ‘Right to Dignity’ project, taking a cue from the Swacch Bharat campaign to repair toilets in two government schools on the Majitha road.
Shelat said students of the school had over the years contributed to several social and environmental causes. At a time when most of the children were obsessed with gadgets, the school aims to channelise the energy of its students in a more productive way to contribute to society.
He said it was remarkable that the Rotary Club of the Amritsar Civil Lines had also come forward to contribute to the project.
At a function organised at Naatshala, head girl of the school Ira Chopra handed over a cheque to Ashish Sharma, president of the club, in the presence of other club members and eminent citizens. The students also staged a play, ‘Idgah’, on the occasion. Dr Nijjar, who was the chief guest, lauded the efforts of the school and asked the parents to support the school in its efforts to instill right values in children.
Meanwhile, the SR Government College for Women contributed in spreading awareness about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan during the session 2015-2016. Activities like poster-making, slogan writing, debate, declamation and essay writing were organised in which students enthusiastically participated.
A seminar was also held on the same topic. Later, a special function was organised at the college auditorium during which principal Sunita Sehgal Dhillon gave away prizes to winners.
During the function, PowerPoint presentations were given to students on the topics - ‘Cleanliness and Hygiene’, ‘Clean City’, ‘Green City’ and ‘My Dream City’.
The principal in her address congratulated the winners and organisers for arranging various activities so that the idea of cleanliness could be reinforced in the minds of young students.
She urged the students to develop the habit of keeping their environment clean that would ultimately result in a clean and healthy India.
