A former sarpanch along with four persons has been booked for allegedly attacking a police party and paving the way for a drug peddler to flee. The incident took place in in Boparai Khurd village here on Wednesday.
The accused have been identified as Sukhdev Singh, former sarpanch of Boparai Khurd village, his supporters Kuldeep Singh, Robin Singh and the drug supplier, Sarabjit Singh.
SSP (Amritsar Rural) Parampal Singh said the police had specific input that Sarabjit Singh of Boparai Khurd was involved in drug trafficking. A raid was conducted and the police team arrested him with 100 gm of narcotic powder along with Rs 25,000 that he had generated through the sale of drugs.
The SSP said the cops were interrogating the suspect when Sukhdev Singh along with his supporters, including Kuldeep and Robin, turned up on their motorcycles and scuffled with the cops. They managed to get Sarabjit released from the police custody and escaped from the spot.
The accused are also said to have torn the uniform of head constable Kulbir Singh during the scuffle.
The Lopoke police have registered a case under Sections 186, 353, 323, 379-B, 120-B of the IPC and 21, 22, 27, 29, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act against them. Raids are on to nab them, the SSP said, adding that whosoever was indulged in drug peddling would be taken to task.
