Two persons, allegedly involved in making fake driving licences and insurance papers, were arrested on Thursday. They have been identified as Sarabjit Singh, alias Rinku, of Mohan Nagar and Manjinder Singh of Ram Nagar, Sultanwind road.
An LCD, a CPU, a printer, a scanner and 10 fake driving licences have been seized.
ADCP Jagjit Singh Walia said the accused were arrested following a tip-off. He said specific information was received that they had been preparing fake documents. They were present at Sarabjit’s house where a raid was conducted to arrest them. The police produced them in a court and took them remand for further interrogation.
Walia said Manjinder had worked an an agent at the district transport office so he knew about the nitty-gritty of preparing licences. Sarabjit was the mastermind. He stumbled upon driving licence cards similar to original ones from an online site. They established the entire set up by installing a computer, a printer and a scanner. He said that after inserting the details in the card, they use to make fake driving licences and later sold these to truck drivers in Jahaj market and transport area.
The ADCP said the fake driving licences appear to be original. The police came across the illegal activity when it verified a licence’ serial number. They had been operating the racket for the past one month. So far, they have sold around 60 fake licences, he said, adding that the police were trying to locate those to whom they had given these fake licences.
A case under Sections 420 and 467 of the IPC has been registered at the Division B police station.
