Family members of Prabhjot Kaur (33), who was allegedly strangled by her in-laws on April 23, today accused police officials of "inaction" against the culprits. They alleged that the police were not arresting the culprits as they were influential and well-connected persons.
At a press conference here today, they also alleged the involvement of deceased's husband and his brother in Prabhjot's killing. They demanded that their names should be included in the FIR besides immediate arrest of the culprits.
The Maqboolpura police had registered a case under Section 302, IPC, against Surinder Singh and Jagdish Kaur, father and mother-in-law of Prabhjot, following the statement of her brother, Sahib Singh.
Davinder Singh, maternal uncle of the deceased, told the media that even after 15 days, the police have failed to arrest the culprits. He said they made rounds of the Police Commissioner's office besides Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), City, in this regard but nothing has been done to arrest them while they were allegedly getting threats from Prabhjot's in-laws. Davinder alleged that it was Prabhjot’s 10-year-old son, Mansidak Singh, who had informed about the incident to her family.
Sahib Singh alleged that Prabhjot’s husband, Navdeep, and his brothers, Damanveer Singh and Harpreet Singh, were also involved in the brutal murder. He alleged that the local police officials were bent upon making it a suicide case. He stated that Prabhjot was married to Navdeep Singh, son of Surinder Singh, a resident of Golden Avenue, for the past 10 years and they had two children, Mansidak Singh (8) and Noor (5).
He alleged that she had a bitter relationship with her in-laws who used to tease and harass the deceased over trivial issues. He alleged that she wanted to live separately with her husband. Hence, the couple was looking for a rented accommodation. On April 23, a dispute had occurred between Prabhjot and her in-laws which took an ugly turn when they physically assaulted her. Later, they strangled her, it was alleged.
ADCP Parampal Singh said the police had registered a murder case. The cause of the death would be ascertained after the autopsy. The accused were absconding and they would be arrested soon. Members of International Human Rights Organisation had also come out in the support of the victim’s family.
