You call it a biography; you call it a drama, call it an action movie or simply a matter of perception. But the makers of upcoming Punjabi film, “Rupinder Gandhi – The Gangster?” have been making the headlines ever since the promotions began. The production of Dream Reality, the film is based on the life of Sarpanch Rupinder Singh Gandhi from Khanna (Punjab), a prolific sportsman and a leader, who sacrificed his own dreams for weak and downtrodden. Directed by Tarn Mann and produced by Daljit Singh Bola, Ravneet Chahal and Taranvir Singh, the film stars Dev Khroud and Kul Sidhu in the lead roles. Tarn, Daljit and Dev were in the town today to interact with the media.
Young director Tarn Mann, who has been keeping his mind off from the controversies and criticism till the film releases, said, “One has to first watch the film before forming a judgment about its subject. I think everyone should take it as a piece of art first because so many people have worked really hard to make the film.”
He said, “Secondly, if you talk about the subject of the film, we are not really trying to be judgmental. As you see our title has a question to the audience, so they will decide themselves about what has been shown in the film.”
TV and film actor Dev Khroud is keeping his fingers crossed for the film and believes that this project will be a significant milestone for his career. He said, “For any actor playing a real life character is beneficial. Here advantage is that the protagonist is from Punjab itself and I could relate comfortably with him as an actor. The film required a lot of hard work and that gives me a creative satisfaction which is above anything else.”
Taran, who spent nine years in Canada and heard about Rupinder Gandhi from his friends circle, was immediately intrigued to make a film on a difficult, but relatable subject. He said, “The comedy-dominated Punjabi industry definitely needs some different subjects and I am confident that the film will leave an impact.”
Producer Daljit Singh Bola said, “The film is a conscious effort towards changing the definition of Punjabi cinema. We equally love the comedy flicks but as entertainers we take it as our duty to give a new direction to our industry. I hope this film will open new doors of creativity.” The film is releasing all over India on September 11th .
