Former city cricketer Harvinder to cast vote

Former international cricketer Harvinder Singh, based in the city, will cast vote in the BCCI election scheduled for October 23.

At present, a bowling coach with the Railways, Harvinder had represented the country as a medium pacer in 1997, 1998 and 2001. During his three-year stint with the Indian team, he played 16 One Day International (ODI) and three Tests. His best was three wickets for 42 runs in an ODI against Pakistan in Toronto. He had played 109 first-class Ranji matches for his home state of Punjab.

Senior Deputy Mayor Raman Bakshi spotted talent in his bowling while he was playing with his peers in a street of Chheharta. Bakshi took the boy from his neighbourhood to the Gandhi cricket ground to hone his skills in the mid-1990s. Soon, he was selected in the Punjab cricket team for the Ranji Trophy, which he had played for the home state for six years.

The Railways appointed him as a Chief Ticket Inspector in 2000 and he played for it in the first-class Ranji tournament from 2000 to 2009.

He had been the coach of the Punjab Senior Cricket team for five years starting from 2009.

He, along with former international players Reetinder Singh Sodhi, Bhupinder Singh Senior and Vikram Rathour, were made lifetime members of the Punjab Cricket Association.

He had resigned from the position of chief selector of the Amritsar Games Association in January 2018.
