The Government Medical College (GMC) is facing acute shortage of class four workers as the state government has not recruited any employee from past several years.
The hospital authorities have been facing tough time due to non- availability of the required staff.
Principal of college said they had deployed one worker in two departments where five persons used to work till some years ago.
According to information, as many as 280 posts of the class fourth employees are lying vacant in the GMC Presently, the strength of employees working in the college is 80.
“Employees are getting retired every month and government has not filled vacant posts for the past several years. Earlier, the government proposed to fill vacancies on contract, but backtracked after the protest of contractual nurses. Now, we don’t have any substitute for employees, who are retiring”, said BS Bal, Principal of the Government Medical College.
Earlier, a number of class four employees in the college were promoted as lab assistants, which led to further shortage of the staff. Officials claimed that work had been suffering due to the shortage of staff.
Unions of class four employees have also been demanding that the government should fill vacant posts. A college employee said, “The state government is not filling vacancies in the Health Department for the past several years. The government does not seem concerned about health services in the state. Employees have been working under stress. The administration should recruit new staff.”
