Guru Nanak Dev University is planning to revise the syllabus of Bachelors of Commerce (semester V) in view of implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). The university authorities are planning to look into subjects related to taxation.
The changes will only be made for the present semester. The final call regarding the content of the syllabus will be taken after getting more clarity on the new tax regime.
As per the original syllabus, the students are expected to learn about indirect and direct taxes but with the GST roll out, the subject on indirect taxation will be replaced with cost accountancy.
The GST is a uniform tax system in the country, which has replaced multiple taxes levied by the Union and state governments. The new tax system has already created a lot of confusion among the public over its implementation.
Dr Jaspal Singh, Head of the Commerce Department, GNDU, said, “There is already a lot of confusion over the implementation of the GST in the country. We do not want to create confusion among the students. The GST will be introduced in the syllabus after more clarity. The university is serious about the future of the students. The colleges as well as students will be informed about it. We are keeping a close watch on new developments.”
