As many as 70 women and 80 men from all over the country took part in the All India Inter-University Taekwondo (men and women) Championships 2015-16 organised by Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU). The event was inaugurated by Prof AS Brar, Vice-Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University. Dr Gurdeep Singh, joint secretary, Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi, was the guest of honor on the occasion.
Three members of the GNDU (men) taekwondo team — Jagmandeep Singh (74 kg), Amandeep Kumar (80 kg) and Ravi Kadyan (+87 kg) — won gold medals. Another four members of the GNDU team — Pavan Kumar (58 kg), Navpreet Singh (68 kg), Harandeep Singh (63 kg) and Ajaypal Singh (87 kg) — won silver medals. The GNDU (men) taekwondo team was declared overall champion with 79 points. Punjabi University, Patiala, was the overall runners-up with 68 points and Panjab University, Chandigarh, came third with 34 points.
Members of the GNDU (women) taekwondo team, Kavita won gold (49 kg), while three silver medals were bagged by Shweta Thakur (73 kg), Kanika Kapoor (53 kg), Monika (67 kg) and Amanpreet Kaur (57 kg) was able to win a bronze medal. GNDU (women) team was declared overall runners-up with 49 points. The women team of University of Kerala was declared overall champion with 56 points and Manipur University bagged third spot with 37 points.
Prof Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, registrar, was the chief guest on the closing day ceremony. Manoj Kumar was the AIU observer of the competition. He appreciated the efforts and preparations made by the Sports Department of the GNDU in a short span after allotment of inter-university championship and standard of officiating with which the competition was organized.
Earlier, Dr HS Randhawa, deputy director sports and head, welcomed the chief guest and others. He also gave details about departmental activities.
