The Department of Posts has come up with school philatelic clubs in educational institutions to promote philately as a hobby among students.
A team of the General Post Office (GPO), Amritsar, has been holding seminars to draw students towards the art of stamp collection. The clubs will be established both in private and government schools as the project progresses.
Students are shown different stamps released by the department.
Niharika Mehta, in charge of the philately bureau, Amritsar, said, “Students are informed about the advantages of collecting stamps. They can also avail Deen Dayal SPARSH (Scholarship for promotion of aptitude and research in stamps as a hobby) Yojana scholarship scheme by becoming members of the club.”
Makhan Singh, Senior Superintendent, Amritsar Division, said, “They are also made part of the postal week celebration. The entire idea is to draw students towards the hobby of stamp collection.”
Neera Sharma, Principal of DAV Public School, said, “We have recently opened a philately club. The students will be encouraged to write letters. This is a unique way of involving students in writing letters. A quiz will also be held. The students can educate themselves about different cultures and history of various countries.”
