Handicraft items on display at trade expo

The trade expo began at Ranjit Avenue here on Wednesday. Traders from Nepal, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Kullu Manali and Patiala are showcasing special handicraft items of their state under the guidance of exhibitor and convener Sunil Gandhi. A total of 60 stalls have been set up in the trade expo. The expo will conclude on March 10.

Gandhi said, “This is our first experience in Amritsar and we hope it will go well”. He added that each shop has magnificent items which will surely attract the public. Handmade items like furniture, utensils, flowers, Punjabi juttis, carpet and clothing are on display, he added.

Mzakir, an artisan from UP, has displayed handmade utensils which are made of Rajasthani sand. There are arrays of tea and coffee mugs having colorful motifs carved, crockery set, handmade mugs for children. He said, “Utensils are microwave safe. They contain lead free color which is harmless.”

Handmade flowers showcased in this fair from Nepal are the highlight of the expo. Made from natural elements, mostly plant peeling and natural fibre that are biodegradable make them eco-friendly. Cloth materials like stockings, peeling of corn plant are used for making these items. “These materials are used to make artificial flowers as showcasing items. Even natural tri-color flowers made of lakheri material are very fascinating,” informed Alo Suu, exhibitor from Nepal.

Seema, a visitor, said, “The prices are very cheap and some of the items are pleasing”. Gaurav Goyal from Saharanpur has put good quality of wooden crockery, decoration pieces, sofa set and wodden swing among other gift items on display. He said, “The handmade furniture items of UP never get damaged and even the polish will not fade. We have oriental sofa which was used in erstwhile times”.

Tilak Raj of Patiala has displayed handmade juttis in different colors and designs. Unique pieces of Jodhpuri Mozri made of special leather are winning the hearts of visitors at the expo. — OC
