The food wing of the Health Department collected 34 samples of food items from various parts of the city, prominently from Food Street, near Crystal Chowk, in a drive here today.
The team took 11 samples of milk being transported to the city by milkmen during an early morning checking on Cheharta and Tarn Taran Roads. Later, in the evening, the team collected 23 samples of various items, including water, sausages and fast food items from various rehris in the market, near Crystal Chowk.
However, many shopkeepers did not set up their stalls today as the news of the Health Department team conducting a check spread in the market. As a result, the activity in the area remained less than usual days.
District health officer, Dr Shivkaran Singh Kahlon, said, “Over four dozen rehris can be seen selling various items at this place every evening. Hundreds of visitors come to this place to eat street food.” He said they had found that many rehriwalas were not keen on maintaining cleanliness.
“We have asked them to cover their heads while cooking. Besides they have also been instructed to get registered with the Health Department and get their workers medically examined,” he added.
“The Health Department has collected a total of 85 samples of food items from various parts of the city during this month,” said Kahlon.
