Amritsar, July 27

Four days after a video went viral in which commuters were seen arguing with traffic Inspector Kuldeep Kaur over the thrashing a youth for jumping the traffic signal, the police have registered a case against an unknown person for allegedly uploading and circulating the video on social media with objectionable remarks against her. The video has gone viral on social networking sites, particularly WhatsApp.

Ironically, the case also includes provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act besides detering public servant from discharge of his duty and Information Technology Act. ACP Sarabjit Singh has been deputed to investigate the case.

The incident had occurred near Sant Singh Sukha Singh School Chowk on the Majitha road here four days ago. It was alleged that a biker, with two others riding pillion, jumped the red light following which a traffic cop pushed him to the ground. Angered over this, passersby surrounded the police team. Inspector Kuldeep Kaur, who reached there after getting the information regarding people arguing with cops, was also confronted by commuters. People alleged that cops had thrashed the biker, inflicting injuries on his arm. In the video, one of the commuters was heard saying cops should intimate the nearby checkpoint to intercept a traffic offender rather than thrashing him in full public view.

Inspector Kuldeep Kaur, in her complaint, stated that ASI Palwinder Singh along with a police party was on duty at SSSS Chownk. At about 6.40 pm, the ASI phoned her, informing about people arguing with him. The complaint further reads that she reached the spot where ASI Palwinder Singh told her that a Bullet motorcycle had jumped the traffic signal and when he tried to stop the errant, his bike slipped and he fell down.

Kuldeep Kaur said she tried to explain the cop’s side but the people started arguing with her. Later, the SHO of the Majitha Road police station reached the spot who managed to pacify the people. She said an unknown person recorded the video and uploaded it on social media using unparliamentary words against her and her caste besides creating hindrance in the discharge of her duty.

ACP Sarabjit Singh said a case was registered and the facts were being verified. The police are trying to identify the person who recorded and circulated the video with objectionable remarks.

The case

  • Cops reportedly pushed three bikers to ground and thrashed one of them for jumping traffic signal near Company Bagh four days ago.
  • Commuters gathered and confronted the cops for “brutally” thrashing the youth, inflicting injuries on his arm.
  • Inspector Kuldeep Kaur turned up and she was also confronted. Meanwhile, someone recorded that scene.
  • Later, someone uploaded the video on social networking sites with ‘indecent’ remarks against the cop.
