Residents of Ganda Singh Wala, a locality on the Tarn Taran road, have set an example by installing 12 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras after pooling money. They plan to install 18 more cameras. So far, the Punjab government has failed to install CCTVs in the city despite repeated assurances.
The continuous burglary and snatching instances in the area forced residents to take the step. Police Commissioner Amar Singh Chahal inaugurated the project of installing CCTV cameras in the area recently. While appreciating the endeavour of area residents he said other localities should also think on these lines.
Bhupinder Singh alias Raju, a resident of the area, said the main objective of the project was to ensure security and safety of the people living in the area. He said, “Initially, we are covering all entrance and exit points to the locality. Later, it will cover all major roads.”
“It will act as a deterrent for unscrupulous elements before they think of committing crime in the area. Even if they dare to do so, they will soon land into the police net with the help of the CCTV footage,” he said.
“We are contemplating to install 30 cameras in various parts of our colony, which has 350 houses,” he added.
According to residents, due to proximity with the Chatiwind canal adjoining the area, it had become a favourite spot for miscreants. They gained entry and escaped from the canal side.
Gurpartap Singh Tikka, acting president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (urban), said they were trying to spread awareness among the people to install cameras in other areas also. He said instead of waiting for the government’s response, the people should come forward and take such security measures.
