Jaswant Singh Gill, known for his role in rescuing miners trapped inside a flooded coal mine at Raniganj in West Bengal in 1989, passed away here on Tuesday.

He was 80 years old and died after suffering a cardiac arrest. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.

A retired engineer, Gill had saved the lives of 65 miners with his intelligence and was recognised for his role across the globe for his efforts.

Remembering his contribution, Indu Aurora, vice-president of the local NGO, Voice of Amritsar, said, “We must recognise the contribution of great men like him.”

His son Sarvpreet Singh said the last rites would be performed at 12 noon at the funeral ground near Gurdwara Shaheeda Sahib.

Commenting upon his dynamic personality, social worker Randeep Kohli said, “He was a gentleman. I had met him a few days ago. He will always be remembered for his bravery.”

DAV Public School Principal Neera Sharma added, “Such people are role models for all of us, especially for the youth. One must learn from their deeds.”

Though he was leading a quiet life in the holy city, he was always available to offer his expertise in the field. He also reached East Jainta Hills (in Meghalaya) to take part in the rescue operations to save 14 miners trapped in the coal mine.

Besides, his operation found a mention in the Limca Book of Records as a national record in the history of coal mining. A Bollywood movie is also being made on his life. He was honoured with the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak by President Ramaswamy Venkataraman in 1991.
