A woman ended her life by hanging herself with the ceiling fan in the Dashmesh Nagar area on the Tarn Taran road here last evening. The police have booked her husband on charges of dowry death. He was identified as Sandeep Singh of Rupowali village and at present staying at Dashmesh Nagar.

Varinder Pal Singh, brother of the deceased, said his sister Navneet Kaur was married to Sandeep Singh. It was a love marriage.

He said his sister used to say that the accused used to physically assault her and demand cash and other things from her parents.

Perturbed over the issue, she hanged herself with a ceiling fan.

Following his complaint, the police have registered a case under Sections 304-B and 34 of the IPC against Sandeep and her in-laws.

Vijay Kumar, investigating officer in the case, said the accused, Sandeep, had been arrested in this regard. Navneet was married to Sandeep around three years ago and the couple had a daughter from the marriage.

He said her family members alleged that earlier Navneet did not tell anything about the issue to her family as it was a love marriage. However, repeated harassment by her husband and in-laws forced her to narrate about the physical and mental torture she was bearing.
