A verbal duel in Chachowali village took an ugly turn when a man was fired at on Wednesday.
A camp was held by officials of the district administration in the village for accepting applications for pension and blue ration card where two political groups created a mess. The injured has been identified as Satnam Singh of Chachowali village, who sustained a bullet injury. He was rushed to a hospital where his condition is stated to be stable.
The police have booked three persons, Tarsem Singh, Baldev Singh and Sukhwinder Singh, all residents of the same village.
Satnam Singh said there was an announcement in the village regarding the arrival of officials from the district administration for receiving applications for blue card and pension. He said he along with Kuldeep Singh and Avtar Singh, former sarpanch, went to the government school in the village. They had a spat with Tarsem Singh. They alleged that Tarsem hurled abuses at them and later fired at him. “When Kuldeep and Avtar tried to intervene, Tarsem fired another shot at Kuldeep, who crouched to save himself. When they raised the alarm, the accused fled away while threatening to kill them,” he said.
Parampal Singh, SSP, Amritsar rural, said a case under Sections 307, 506, 34 of the IPC and 25, 27, 54, 59 of the Arms act was registered against them and further investigation was under way. He said the accused were absconding and raids were on to nab them.
Though the exact reason behind the brawl is yet to be ascertained, sources said it was a result of political rivalry between the groups as one of them feared that the other one would gain villagers’ support by facilitating the camp for social welfare schemes.
