Mauritius is keen to enter cultural and tourism exchange with Punjab, says Mauritius president Kailash Purryag, who was in the city to pay obeisance at Golden Temple.
Talking to mediapersons at the information centre of the Golden Temple, Kailash said he was pleased to have paid obeisance at the holiest place of Sikhs.
He said he experienced spiritual bliss during his stay at the shrine, adding that he had read a lot about Harmandar Sahib and wished to be here while visiting Punjab.
He was invited by a Jalandhar-based private university and availed the opportunity to visit the holy city.
He said the Sikhs formed a miniscule minority in the multi-ethnic and multi-religious country of Mauritius. Kailash said there were some gurdwaras in Mauritius.
Recalling his age-old ties with India, he said his grandfather Lakshman Purryag had migrated from Bihar to Mauritius to earn a living as a labourer in 1869.
He said there was a unique understanding and relation between India and Mauritius and hoped that it would forge a deep understanding between people of his country and the agrarian state of Punjab.
He said many students and teachers from Punjab had already settled in Mauritius.
