Acting tough against the violators for the first time, the Municipal Corporation has recommended registration of a police case against two tent-house owners who had installed tents on roads in clear violation of the norms.

Installing tents to organise ‘langar’ and even religious events is not an uncommon norm in city. However many a time, roads are damaged while fixing the tent besides creating traffic chaos. In order to send a strong message to violators, the MC Commissioner has written a letter to the Commissioner of Police to register a case against two tent houses, Dhawan Light and Tent House and Kumar Light and Tent house.

Both these tent houses had provided tents for events on the circular road. MC officials said it was the duty of a tent house to ensure that his workers did not erect a tent on a road. “The tent is erected by workers of a tent house and if they cause any damage to the road, it is the tent-house owner’s responsibility,” said an official.

The MC officials said the registration of a case against the tent houses would force them not to rent out equipment to individuals or organisations who use the roads to organise such events.

While the MC norms require permission to organise any event at a public place, it has been observed that most of the time, organisers of such events fail to approach the MC. Even after the event is over, they leave without ensuring that all waste generated during the event is properly disposed of.

MC Commissioner Pardeep Sabharwal said, “It is the duty of organisers of such events to seek permission from the MC. Roads cannot be damaged to fix a tent. It is the duty of the organisers to ensure that no disruption is caused in traffic and no waste such as paper glasses, plates or food waste are thrown on the road.” He said tent owners must ensure that they do not provide tents to people who plan to erect these on roads.
