The office of the Municipal Corporation, Amritsar, has been utilising solid waste material to beautify its premises. MC Commissioner Sonali Giri has started using waste plastic bottles and planted saplings in it.

Not only the MC Office, but officials have decided to start the practice in other government offices and public places also. The department is making these efforts for bringing the city on a good position in the Swachh Survekshan Survey-2018.

The MC office has asked safai Karamcharis to collect used plastic bottles, especially 2-litre bottles of beverages. The department concerned has planted saplings and hanged these bottles in a symmetrical way.

The office is trying to send a message of environment conservation with the initiative. The department has also made an appeal to the public to join them and plant saplings in waste bottles in their houses.

Visitors at the MC office are happy with the MC initiative.

Renu, a resident of Guru Nanak Colony, said: “Though the idea is not new to plant the saplings in bottles, I think its good that the MC has adopted this. It would encourage residents. The MC should make it sustainable to keep the city clean”. Ajay Kumar, another resident, said: “There are several ways to reuse the waste material. We should adopt this culture and it would help the civic body in the management of waste.”
