Mela Umra Nangal Da: Music, sports, stunts mark Day 3

Scores of activities, music, sports and stunts marked the three day ‘Mela Umra Nangal da’ , held at village Umra Nangal, near Beas district in Amritsar.

The mela is conducted every year in the fond memory of former Revenue Minister, Late Jathedar Jeevan Singh Umra Nangal, his son Shaheed Sukhdev Singh Umra Nangal and Sampooran Kaur, who lost their lives in safeguarding the peace of Punjab during the 1984 riots.

The mela preserves and promotes the richness of the cultural heritage and games of Punjab to promote peace and brotherhood. Being held for the 13th time under the aegis of IG Premraj Singh Umra Nangal, it was also an occasion to honour the kin of civil and police martyrs.

A free medical check-up camp was also organised. Baljit Johal anchored the programme.

The bhog of Sukhmani Sahib marked the beginning of the mela on December 15. White balloons were released to spread the message of peace.

Punjabi film stars and singers including Daljit Dosanjh, Kanwar Grewal and Harjit Harman enthralled the audience.

The home team emerged winner in the kabaddi tournament. As many as seven kabaddi academies took part in 12 kabaddi matches. Players were presented mementos by IG Paramraj Singh Umra Nangal and Janmeja Singh Sakhon.

“Life is not only sacrificed for the protection of the frontiers, but also to maintain the peace in the internal environment of the country. I feel proud to belong to one such family. The mela is organised each year in the memory of the martyrs. This is the 13th edition. Our endeavour is to move the youth to a brighter side of life by seeking their involvement in cultural games,” Umra Nangal.

People between the age group of 5 to 22 years performed gymnastics, which was appreciated by the crowd.

Major Rajasthani performed stunts on Bullet motorcycle, which left the audience spellbound.

Other prominent persons, who were present during the three-day mela, include Cabinet Minister Anil Joshi, CPS Inderbir Singh Bolaria, Khadoor Sahib MLA Manjeet Singh Manna, MP Ranjeet Singh Brahmpura, PWD Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon, former Union minister Balwant Singh Ramuwalia,, former MLA Sewa Singh Sekhon , Additional Director General of Police Sanjiv Kalra, IG (Jalandhar zone) Loknath Andhra, , IG (Border range) Ishwar Chandra Sharma, DIG (Border range) Aran Kumar Mittal and Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh.
