“The police is yet to make any arrest in the case as the accused is on the run,” said Jasdeep Singh, SSP, Amritsar rural police. He said raids were being conducted to nab the accused.

Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased held a protest on main GT road demanding immediate arrest of the culprit. The police handed over the body of the victim to the family after a post-mortem examination, which was conducted at Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Civil Hospital here.

According to police officials the accused had come to attend marriage of Jatinder Singh. Harpal had come to play music as DJ at the marriage function. The police said during the function an altercation took place between Manish and Harpal over money. They said Manish snatched the weapon of Karan Trehan, also of Rayya, and fired at Harpal, who died on way to the hospital. The Beas police have registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC and under the Arms Act.

The family members staged a protest near Vallah bypass by keeping the body of the deceased on the road. They accused police officials of sheltering the accused. They demanded immediate arrest of Manish Nayyar. The agitators alleged that Harpal demanded Rs65,000 for playing DJ while Manish Kumar was adamant on giving Rs50,000. This led to an altercation and subsequent killing of Harpal.

His family members, including his wife Manmeet Kaur, alleged that when there was complete ban on carrying and using arms in marriage palaces, the menace continued unabated. The district administration and the Police Department had failed to curb the trend, they added.

DSP Sohan Singh, who came to the spot to pacify the family, assured that the accused would be arrested soon.
