Motorcyclists’ silencer blast creates nuisance on city roads

City’s youth continue to flout traffic norms and indulge in noise pollution by making certain modification in their motorcycles such as Royal Enfield often called “Bullet”.

Boys alter silencers of their bikes to generate high decibel noise (silencer blast), which disturbs the peaceful atmosphere. It had once prompted the authorities of Guru Nanak Dev University to ban entry of these motorcycles on its campus.

Nevertheless, the traffic police authorities have failed to take notice of this violation and initiate punitive action against violators. The traffic police intercepted a couple of youth riding on Bullet motorcycle for the similar offence recently, but they were later let off with warning after policemen got a phone call.

As per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules and Motor Vehicle Act, silencer blast is an offence. According to the police, the youth create the silencer blast by switching the engine off and on when the motorcycle is at high speed. This way a firecracker like sound or firing bullet is generated by the engine.

“Sudden blast creates panic among the commuters. It can lead to a road mishap. The youth should be discouraged from indulging in such activity. The police should take prompt action against such offenders,” said Hardev Singh of the Civil Lines area.

An official, preferring anonymity, said, “Problem arises when we apprehend youth on a bullet motorcycle indulging in such an act. In the absence of any technical input, we cannot not find the mechanism, which offenders use to generate sound blast. Now, the Police Department is thinking over taking help of mechanics to get the technical knowhow about this.”

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (traffic) Dhruman Nimbale said in the past they had partial success checking this problem. He said, “We will now impound such motorcycles under Section 90 of Central Motor Vehicle Rules.” He admitted that this is a nuisance and it should be dealt with sternly.
