Murrah buffalo bags first prize at cattle fair

A Murrah buffalo owned by Gurjant Singh of Nurpur village bagged the first prize of Rs 10,000 in the district-level cattle fair organised by the Animal Husbandry Department at Vallah ground. The fair concluded here today. The buffalo recorded a milk yield of 16.650 litres.

In Nili Ravi category, buffalo owned by Bhupinder Singh of Chachowali village won first prize of Rs 10,000. The buffalo gave a milk yield of 17.470 litres. Similarly, Holstein freesia cow owned by Rajinder Singh of Butari village yielded 44.4kg milk winning the first prize while Jersy cross with Desi cow owned by Sartaj Dairy Farm, Baba Bakala, won the first prize by giving a milk yield of 22.946 litres. The Sahiwal cow breed owned by Angrej Singh of Lashkari Nangal yielded milk of 11.250 litres.

Dr Pawan Malhotra said, besides buffaloes and cows, competitions were held in 53 categories, including horses, dogs, cocks and turkey birds. In horses, Nukra and Marwari breed ruled the roost and won prizes, he added. He said cash prizes worth Rs 5.50 lakh were distributed among winners of these 53 categories. While terming the district cattle fair a success, Dr Malhotra said over 2,000 animals were registered during the fair. Judges from Khalsa College Veterinary College, experts from RVC and other districts gave their opinions.

Speaking on the occasion, Animal Husbandry Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said such cattle fairs were organised in every district of Punjab in order to encourage farmers to adopt such additional occupation to supplement their incomes.
