National Postal Week begins

Amritsar: National Postal Week celebrations began at city post offices on Monday. The celebrations will continue till October 15. These aimed at spreading awareness about the relevance of posts in people’s lives. People are being educated about various aspects of the postal service. The department has launched a service to help people trace their parcels from the Asia Pacific region. Parcels can be up to 2 kg. “Days have been earmarked to promote philately and other services. We are planning to involve students,” said a senior official at the head post office. tns

Magazine, cartridges recovered

Tarn Taran: A patrolling party of the BSF recovered one magazine and 18 cartridges from behind the fencing in the Rattoke area. The Khemkaran police said here Monday that a case under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act had been registered in this regard on the written statement of Sunil Kumar, Commandant of the 77/B Battalion, Rattoke. The Commandant said the patrolling party was on its routine duty when it recovered the ammunition. OC

Four of robbers’ gang held

Amritsar: With the arrest of four persons, the Ajnala police on Monday claimed to have busted a gang of robbers. Those arrested were identified as Harpreet Singh, Balkar Singh, Ravinder Singh, all residents of Ajnala, and Manpreet Singh  of the Bhakha Hari Singh area. The police recovered two 32 bore revolvers with eight rounds, Rs 8,000 in cash, two watches, three expensive mobile phones and a scooter from them. They had recently barged into a house belonging to Ajmer Singh of Chheba Colony and decamped with valuables. A case under Sections 458 and 380 of the IPC and 25, 54, 59 of the Arms Act was registered at that time. TNS

150 units of blood collected

Tarn Taran: The Kar Sewa Sect, Sarhali Sahib, organised a blood donation camp at the Gurdwara Singh Sahib Baba Ram Singh. As many as 150 units of blood were collected. Sect head Baba Sukha Singh said one more blood donation camp would be held on Thursday (October 12). Doctors from the Civil Hospital  collected blood. Certificates were awarded to blood donors by Baba Sukha Singh. OC

Zonal youth fest from Oct 14

Amritsar: Guru Nanak  Dev University will organise the Zone A youth festival for colleges of Amritsar district from October 14 to 17. The festival will start with bhangra. Group song (Indian), shabad/bhajan, kavishri, rangoli and phulkari competitions will be held. TNS

Short movie show

Amritsar: The Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi, Chandigarh, on Monday showed a short movie “Judge Madam” by Ninder Ghuhiwanvi at Virsa Vihar here. The one-hour-long film presented the struggle faced by women judges. The story proceeds with the lead character facing pangs of the profession. Popular Punjabi actress Jatinder Kaur played the lead role. TNS

Lecturers’ union prez elected

Tarn Taran: Kulbir Singh, lecturer at local Government Senior Secondary School, was elected the district president of the Government School Lecturers’ Union. Aman Sharma, president of the Amritsar district unit of the organisation, was among those who spoke on the occasion and discussed demands of the union. Sukhjit Kumar was the stage secretary on the occasion. OC  

Online show #Lovebytes 

Amritsar: Amritsar-born Sukhmani Sadana has returned to the web with her online show “#Lovebytes”, to be telecast on Sony TV’s mobile application Sony LIV from October 11. The original show was run in 2015 as India’s first digital entertainment programme. The show dealt with an urban couple and their everyday problems. Kushal Punjabi and Sukhmani Sadana acted in the show. Talking about it, she said, “The story begins from where it ended in 2015. We are back and this time all  episodes are available online, unlike the last time when these were released on particular days on the web. We have added a hash tag ahead of the name.”  The show will be of 10-minute duration. “The story is about young people and this time too it is going to strike a chord with the audience. We have moved to outdoor locations. This time, Remix-fame Shewta Gulati is also part of the show,” she said. TNS
