A new diagnostic centre with the facility to conduct ultra-modern tests such as MRI scans was inaugurated at Government Medical College here today. With this, the institution has become the first in the public sector to provide the facility in the state.

The diagnostic centre has been built at a cost of Rs 41 crore, out of which Rs 27 crore has been spent on the building. The remaining Rs 14 crore is earmarked to purchase various machines required for diagnostic tests.

The proposed skill development centre at the college is aimed at training paramedical workers for hospitals. The college plans to run various courses to overcome the shortage of qualified paramedics in the health sector.

Speaking on the occasion, Joshi said the new centre would provide diagnostic facilities at a nominal price. He also advised doctors to serve the patients with a missionary zeal. He said people can benefit from these new buildings only if the doctors are ready to lay aside their greed. He said the reputation of the doctors, who were earlier thought of as God, has eroded in the recent times.

Secretary, Medical Education and Research, Husan Lal said because of the various health schemes available at government hospitals in the state, the number of child-delivery cases has increased four times. He said the public’s faith in the government health sector has been restored and a large numbers of patients are getting benefits of various government schemes.

Government Medical College principal Dr Santokh Singh, DRME Dr Manjit Kaur Mohi, Dr Sohan Singh and other officials of the college were also present.
